Overview

La Morenita, nestled on SE Hawthorne Boulevard in Portland, offers an authentic slice of Mexican culinary tradition. Specializing in hearty burritos, flavorful tacos, and vibrant breakfast options, this restaurant shines by embracing classic flavors with genuine passion.

The star of La Morenita’s menu is undoubtedly their burritos. The Morenita Burrito, featuring chile relleno alongside beef, beans, and fresh vegetables, distinguishes itself from typical offerings by weaving in that unique, comforting texture and subtle spice. This combination creates a satisfying bite that resonates deeply with anyone who appreciates traditional Mexican comfort food. Meanwhile, those seeking variety are drawn to options like the shrimp or fajita burritos, each layered with fresh guacamole, pico de gallo, and a blend of seasoned fillings that balance richness and brightness beautifully.

Tacos at La Morenita are a culinary revelation. Both patrons and first-timers agree that the carnitas tacos, with their tender, juicy fried pork, deliver a nostalgic taste evocative of true Mexican street food. The shredded beef and asada tacos also hold their own, each bite offering bold seasoning and fresh toppings. Complementing these are intense red salsas, praised for their heat, alongside milder green counterparts, perfect to tailor each mouthful to your spice preference.

The breakfast burritos stand out for capturing the essence of morning flavors with ingredients like chorizo and eggs cooked just right. The inviting covered outdoor seating, with a clear roof allowing natural light and the soothing sound of rainfall, extends the dining experience beyond just food, creating a relaxed atmosphere suitable for casual diners and brunch seekers alike.

La Morenita caters to those craving an honest, heartfelt taste of Mexico. Whether you’re a local chasing the best burrito in Portland or a visitor looking to indulge in traditional dishes rendered with care, this spot delivers. The chef’s dedication shines in every dish, making La Morenita not just a meal but a warm invitation to savor culinary heritage with every bite.

Service was great, wanted to try this place bc so many people say the burritos are fire! I got the Morenita burrito, mine had relleno, beef, lettuce, tomato, onion and beans - was pretty good. I loved the Chile relleno bc that’s one a my faves. But I would say that their TACOS are what are the best. Carnitas to be exact.. I got carnitas taco and it was amazing! My partner got shredded beef burrito, but he also agrees tacos are the best. Great place for tacos get ittt yummy chips and yummy pickled veggies And the red salsa is HOT AND DELICIOUS green is mild Still on the lookout for my FAVORITE burrito In portland :) it’s a fun adventure

First time and was very impressed! The Morenita Burrito is absolutely phenomenal. The chille relleno they add in there make it amazing and is something I haven’t experienced elsewhere. I highly recommend it. The quesadillas and tacos are also very good.

This is the breakfast burrito spot! Couldn’t go wrong with the chorizo burrito sans beans! Also there covered eating area outside has a clear roof and sounds great in the rain.

A little piece of flavor from home, carnitas or “fried pork” taco really took me back home, hard to find a good taco so far away from Mexico. Chef is definitely cooking with heart, you can taste it on how juicy and tasty that taco was.

Machaca and Egg Burrito was huge and tasty. Loved the green sauce. Finished every drop of it! (Red sauce was too hot for me but maybe good for you.) Could use more drink options; they had a lot of different canned soda, bottle water, orange juice and horchata. Service was friendly and fast! Atmosphere was okay. First table we sat at had water on it, likely from an early morning rain coming sideways a bit.

Three tacos. Asada, chicken, and spicy pork. That’s it. That’s the review. Fine. I’ll elaborate. All the meats were solid. Nothing over the top, just chill, flavorful goodness that hits right without trying too hard. You eat one, think “nice,” and by the third you’re already planning your next visit. The chipotle sauce was great. The green salsa had good flavor, no heat. The red had heat, not much flavor. Together, they get the job done. La Morenita doesn’t need to show off. It’s just quietly doing everything right. Give it a shot!
